How do you move on with your life once you have left your abuser? What are the steps required to make that first move towards independence? Well, everyone's situation is going to be different depending on their current circumstances and their own personal growth.
Whether you have found yourself in a temporary shelter, sleeping on the couches of relatives and friends or have found yourself your own little slice of heaven, it can seem overwhelming when everything you have known for many years has suddenly been thrust upward and there is no net to help you catch it as it returns to earth.
Learning to take it day by day is the best advice that I could give to anyone who has found themselves in a similar situation. Try to refrain from allowing yourself to crawl under the covers and hide from the world, from your life. With time, it does get better but it is something that can only be accomplished if you are a participant. When you find yourself in those moments that you feel lost or unable to cope or even perhaps that you believe you are not as strong as you thought, remember one thing, YOU have survived and you made the choice for yourself and/or for your children, that decision in itself took a lot of courage, strength and even forgiveness. Please don't expect everything to go smoothly on an immediate basis, it won't, there are a lot of things that need to be dealt with and your first priority is to take care of yourself, both physically and emotionally.
When we have been in an abusive relationship for many years, or even months, we tend to blame ourselves for having remained in such a relationship knowing that it wasn't a good choice, for that we tend to forget that we are allowed to forgive ourselves for such decisions, perhaps that is the starting point to recovery.
Forgiveness.
Instead of letting your emotions build up inside of you, try expressing them on paper, on the internet or to a relative or friend. When you blame yourself for not leaving your situation sooner, the emotional devastation can come close to comparison of what you went through because of your abuser, do not give them any additional power, take it back.
This blog has been a great release for me. You can write about pretty much anything and everything that you feel. You have an option to 'publish' a post or not, trust me, I have written many posts that I would never publish on here, they are for me only and contain my most personal writings. When I go back and read them, in more ways then one they are helping me to deal with the emotional aspects of what I have gone through.
If anyone out there would like to start their own blog or journal and are unsure how to get one started, let me know I will be more than happy to get you started.
